(Papaver rhoeas*)

Sowing - For best results, sow in the Autumn, as the seed germinates better after exposure to Winter frosts. To ensure good germination sow in a well raked seed bed ensuring that the soil is fine and crumbly. Scatter the seed, rake lightly and firm down well. Lightly disturb the soil in Spring to trigger germination. Keep well watered and weeded. Alternatively, for a Spring sowing, mix the seed with damp sand, place in a polythene bag and refrigerate for a period of 3-4 weeks; then broadcast the mixture onto the prepared seed bed as above.

Maintenance - Cornfield annuals can be encouraged to return every year. Simply cut back and remove the dead plants after the seed has fallen. Recultivate the ground the following Spring. This wildflower thrives in disturbed ground.
